Lecture 1
Globalization may seem like its turning the world into a borderless mass that is one
world, one culture, a total existence where humans have access to all resources. But
borders do exist. With borders, come restrictions. This is true for all resources including
media. e.g. to be a broadcaster in Canada, you need to be a Canadian company owned
by a Canadian. Sometimes the influence the state and borders has on the
communication is very underrated.
The definition of a text-A text in communication studies is anything that can be
examined.
Something that helps in analyzing texts when it is in the format of an audio-visual text is
the context surrounding the video.
Video examined in class-Carleton promotional video to recruit students- everything that
is included is on purpose to communicate somethings to the viewers, in this case
students. Maybe the use of computer and CDs etc. is to make the prof in the video look
media savvy and friendly.
The types of studies conducted: Critical or administrative?
Administrative-
1. Conducted in the service of a public or private admin agency
2. Sees media as a useful tool to be harnessed for corporate/agency goals
3. Solves small problems but doesn't look at the big picture- who's listening to the radio
at this hour/ who watches this tv show and where do they live.
4. Assumption that it isn't political
5. Assumption that it is based more on quantitative and empirical research- e.g. who is
listening to what radio channel at what time.
Critical-
1. Conducted in the service of society broadly- sees that communication is a useful
tool and could be used to make the world a better place
2. Sees media systems in general as something in need of study/scrutiny
3. Deals with big picture issues- e.g. racism- effects of widespread racism and how the
media affects that.

4. Assumption that it is political- always. e.g. how media and communication operate is
always about power in a certain sense and in that sense it means who can
communicate with who and in what ways- hence some form of politics is always
involved
5. Assumption that it is based more on a qualitative and theoretical research- its not
data and hence not measurable.
THE PAYNE FUND STUDIES: What kind of a study was this? What was the purpose?
-Took place in 1929-1932
-Bunch of research on the affect of movies on films because it was found in the late
1920s that movies or new media have a negative effect on the young generation. it
was studied empirically.
-The idea here was that they wanted to find out the exact effect movies had on kids.
they found that movies had a negative effect on sleeping patterns (scary movies).
they also found a variety of ways movies negatively affected children.
-Was this a critical or administrative study?
