Certain themes, historically, have been deemed deviant: sluts. nuts, and perverts and criminality. New research has broadened the term of deviance to include more . even people who voluntarily remain childless are seen as deviant. Deviance transcends the individual level and exists in the societal level. It is important to realize just because you don"t agree with something doesn"t make it deviant how can we recognize deviance when we see it. Dictionary de nition of deviance: deviating form an accepted norm. Deviance is used di erently in academic research than how it is in the dictionary. The objective view of deviance claim that the presence of certisn characteristics is deviant, and if we look at those characteristics, we can all de ne deviance.
