I"m so stressed right now: person-situation interaction/transaction: a pattern of cognitive appraisals, physiological responses, and behavioural tendencies that occur in response to a perceived imbalance between the situational demands and the resources needed to cope with them. Stressors: eliciting stimuli (physical or psychological) that place demands that endanger our well-being: requires us to adapt in some manner, the greater the imbalance between demands and resources, the more stressful, 3 types: Catastrophic events: occur unexpectedly and affect large numbers of people (natural disaster, war) Major negative events: sexual abuse, death of a loved one, career failure: characteristics: intensity, duration, predictability, controllability, chronicity. Appraisal process: primary appraisal demands (benign, neutral/irrelevant, or threatening, secondary appraisal resources available (knowledge/abilities, support)
