Occurred after death of franz ferdinand in 1914 -> officially started, immediate cause. Due to the formation of nation states by treaty of westphalia, competition was high. This can be seen through imperialism: africa and parts of asia were rich in resources and contention among european countries. Nations wanted to show off their dominance and power. Cult of the offensive: whoever strikes first will win. Great powers went to war for no reason. Popular opinion that europe would be lifted up and invigorated by war. Proven wrong by immense suffering and destruction it caused. Achieved certain humanitarian and other success but it was weakened by absence if us membership and by its own lack of effectiveness in ensuring collective security. Wilson wanted to make a political club of nations that made political decisions collectively. Us senate did not approve their participation -> europe was unstable.
