Document Summary

The smallest, simplest, and most abundant cells on earth. Prokaryotes lack a nucleus and complex organelles. Do(cid:374)(cid:859)t ha(cid:448)e (cid:373)e(cid:373)(cid:271)ra(cid:374)e (cid:271)ou(cid:374)d orga(cid:374)elles (cid:449)ithi(cid:374) their (cid:272)ells. Very small and reproduce quickly via binary fission. 4 phases of growth lag logarithmic growth: stationary, death. Doubling time (time for one generation) calculated in logarithmic phase. Some can grow fast (double in 10 minutes) Some grow slow (double in 24 hours) Organisms that can grow fast are not necessarily the most pathogenic: ex: tuberculosis is a slow growing bacteria but it extremely pathogenic. Two different strains of e. coli are probably 60% identical. Two general types of bacteria: gram positive = purple, gram negative = pink. Add counter stain for pink colour. Has cell wall peptidoglycan: much more thick than gram negative. Made up of glycan backbone: g-m-g-m-g-m, between these exist peptide cross-linkages. Space between cell wall and outer membrane is the periplasmic space. O-specific polysaccharide also called o-antigen: antigenic and highly variable.
