Lecture 11 (Jan30)
Warmup: In the game of Yahtzee five identical six-sided die are rolled. If we are only concerned with the top faces, how many
outcomes are there for a single roll?
Ex. An elderly watch maker has died. In her will she has left seven identical pocket watches. These will be given to her grandchildren,
Karen, Liam, and Max. The will stipulates that each must receive a watch, and Max must not get more than two pocket watches. In
how many ways can the will be fulfilled?
Ex. Farmer Joseph is going out to collect eggs from his chickens. He expects one hundred identical white eggs. First, we will pick
three “egg bags” out of his seven different colored bags. To ensure the bags do not break, he will load the bags in a particular way. He
loads each bag with at least thirty eggs, unless he has his lucky blue bag in which he will load it with at least thirty-five eggs. In how
many ways can he collect the eggs.
