Document Summary

Ingestion: mechanical digestion, animals are defined in part by their internal digestion of food. Digestion: chemical digestion (enzymatic hydrolysis), break down food into molecules that can be taken up by cells. Absorption: nutrient molecules enter body cells, transport of molecules into the body"s cells. Elimination: undigested material, get rid of undigested/unusable material. Mouth (teeth) and oral cavity acquire food, ingestion teeth and tongue (chewing, mechanical digestion, muscles) Salivary glands secrete saliva into oral cavity, enzyme amylase to help chemically digest starch and glycogen, plus mucus for lubrication and some anti-microbial agents. Pharynx (throat) swallow, epiglottis to prevent food entering trachea. Oesophagus convey food to stomach, smooth muscle for peristalsis. Stomach more mechanical digestion (muscle), secretes acid (hcl) and enzymes for chemical digestion, mainly of proteins as well as hormones (e. g. gastrin) for digestive control. Duodenum (digestion) first 30cm of small intestine. Jejunum and ileum (continued digestion and absorption) ileum is final 3m of small intestine.
