Modernization theory a theory used to explain the process of modernization that a nation goes through as it transitions from a traditional society to a modern one. The capitalist version of modernization theorized that as nations developed, economic development and social change would lead to democracy. Benign dictatorship a theoretical form of government in which an authoritarian leader exercises absolute political power over the state but is seen to do so for the benefit of the population as a whole. Hybrid regime (illiberal democracy) a governing system in which, although elections take place, citizens are cut off from knowledge about the activities of those who exercise real power because of the lack of civil liberties. Parliamentary system a unitary system of government. A system of democratic governance of a state in which the executive branch derives its democratic legitimacy from, and is held accountable to, the legislature (parliament). The executive and legislative branches are thus interconnected.
