Document Summary

Gendered and sexualized carceral violence in north america. One main theme that runs throughout the readings this week, is the way in which those who are meant to uphold the laws governing gendered violence are often the ones who perpetrate that violence. For example, as palmater (2016) demonstrates, indigenous women are often victims of police-involved violence which prevents them from coming forward to report crimes (p. 282). This fear of police puts indigenous women in a more vulnerable position as often it leads them to stay in abusive homes (palmater, 2016, p. 283). We see a similar victim blaming among black women charged with drug crimes. Black women charged with drug crimes are penalized more severely than others charged with drug trafficking (p. 149). This framing ignores the socio-economic system that positions black women into precarious means of employment such as drug dealing (maynard, 2017, p. 147).
