Document Summary

Chronometry: the science of the measurement of time. Chronology: the science of locating events in time, which relies upon chronometry. Direct dating: uses analysis of the artifact, ecofact, or feature itself to arrive at its age; done on the material. Indirect dating: uses analysis of material associated with the artifact, ecofact, or feature being studied to evaluate its age; done through associations. Relative dating: age of one item in relation to other items. Stratigraphy: sequence of archaeological deposits, interpretation of stratification. Law of superposition: succession of layers provides relative chronological sequence. Harris matrix: a tool to depict depositional sequence. Seriation: dating based on observable changes in artifacts or features through time. Frequency: how often does an artifact or feature type occur in the archaeological record during a certain time at a particular place, assumes that each type of artifact/feature experiences predictable frequency variation through time. Type: a class of objects defined by a consistent clustering of attributes.
