Developmental psychology is a branch of psychology that studies physical, cognitive, and social change throughout the life span. How do we change as we age? (experience both stability and change) Some characteristics (ie. temperament) are very stable however we cannot predict all of our eventual traits based on early years of life (ie. social attitudes) Stability provides our identify, our potential for change gives hope for future: prenatal development and the newborn, conception, prenatal development (gef) Zygote: the fertilized egg, enters a 2 week period of rapid cell division and develops into an embryo. Embryo: developing human organism from about 2 weeks after fertilization through the second month (organs develop) At each prenatal stage, genetic and environmental factors affect our development. Fetus is responsive to sound, prefer mother"s voice, language. Teratogens: monster maker agents (chemicals, viruses) that ca reach the embryo or fetus during prenatal development and cause harm.
