Stress: the process by which we perceive and respond to certain events called stressors, that we appraise as threatening or challenging. Sympathetic nervous system: epinephrine released, and norepinephrine, increase heart rate and respiration, diverts blood from digestion to the skeletal muscles, dulls feelings of pain, releases sugar and fat form body"s stores, leads to fight or flight reaction. Additional stress response system occurs: orders from cerebral cortex secrete glucocorticoid stress hormones (like cortisol) General adaptation syndrome: selye"s concept of the body"s adaptive response to stress in three phases alarm, resistance, exhaustion. Tend and befriend: under stress, people (especially women) often provide support to others and bond with and seek support from others. Women tend to nurture and band together. Women"s brains become more active in areas important for face processing and empathy. Men have more of a tendency to socially withdraw, turn to alcohol or become aggressive.
