Document Summary

The soul is the form (essence) of the body, while the body is the matter. The soul and the body are not two distinct substances they are 2 aspects of the same substance. The soul is the first actuality of a natural body that is potentially alive (a living being). Through our senses (mainly our sense of touch) we experience pleasure and pain and this is what determines our desires. Perception occurs when we are moved or affected by external things. Perception can be potential or actual, but in either case, what is perceived is an object of perception. Perception depends on what is present (versus knowledge which is universal).
