Rap and hip hop culture by fernando orejuela. A heightened speech, talking in rhyme, not exactly signing but not really conversing, expressive poetry (poetic techniques- alliteration, metaphors), storytelling. Improvisation ( my sister , oh lord , repeating various verses) people dancing the song would continue until that dance was done: for example: willis proctor and the georgia sea island singers one of these days . Georgia sea islands were off the coast of georgia, it was too hot for the white slave owners so they often did not stay on the island, leaving a black slave owner in charge. Po lazarus by james carter & the prisoners. Different from work songs as this was done for fun. Work songs: slave/prison labour, slow enough for the weakest to keep up, hammer/axe percussion, call and response, basic melody, easy to follow along or learn.
