Grt2100 -- full lecture reviews for final exam. The notion of physical death has changed due to technology -- can keep people alive. Clinical death: heart and breathing stopped, no evident brain activity (near death experience = resuscitation still possible) Brain death: cessation of brain functioning -- may still be able to breathe w/o assistance (many people consider this to be alive) Permanent vegetative state on life support (unaware but seem awake > Government can"t force private hospitals regarding religion (i. e. christian hospitals and euthanasia) Social death: treating people as if they"re dead though they"re not (i. e. dementia, abandonment in ltc) Vs not acknowledging physical death until means for funeral are attained (or other rituals/social expectations) Death is a state and a process. Palliative sedation: suffering at end of life helped with sedative doses of medicine as alternative to euthanasia -- works with religion b/c they"re still living.
