The Nurse-client relationship: a building block of professional nursing practice
1984 nurses + 1 lawyer wrote
8700 RNs in NB
oOut of 8700 nurses, get 20 complaints in a year, 13 serious
Mandate:
Regulates RNs and NPs in NB to ensure the provision of safe, competent and
ethical care in the interest of the public
Under the nurses act, NANB is legally responsible to protect the public by
regulating members of the nursing profession in NB care
Regulatory framework:
Promote good practice
Prevent poor practice
Intervening when practice is unacceptable
oEmployer should intervene first and then go to NANB if still needed,
need to make formal complaint and anyone can make a complaint
(employer, public, co-worker, student nurse)
oCant turn a blind eye, need to report if see something or can go down
for it
oEx: in a long time care facility, a RN was verbally harassing a patient
with dementia and nurses turned a blind eye, they could also get in
trouble but the nurse was reported by a superior
Accountability
RNs receive direction for their practice in a variety of ways.
4 components that outline what RNs can or cannot do: (all result in safe,
competent, ethical care)
oStandards of practice
oLegislation
oEmployers policies
oIndividual competence
Standards
A standard is:
oAn authoritative statement
oA description of the required and expected behaviour of ever RN
oUsed to evaluate individual performance
Practice standard: the therapeutic nurse-client relationship
oAccountability
oEpisode of care
oPlanned, time limited, goal directed
