Scientific study of how people think (cognition), feel (emotion) and act (behaviour) There are different levels of analysis and methods of psychology. Understanding how to pursue those types of questions, the approach to take. We cannot know what causes something without carefully examining approaches. We cannot trust our personal experience as a valid source of evidence. Personal experience has severe limitations, difficult to trust. Given random data, we look for order and meaningful patterns. The order that we see is based on our experience or past history. Might miss a pattern that is more meaningful, or a pattern others see. Tend to look for order sometimes where there is none. Confirmation bias: we attend to what we agree with and ignore what we don"t. We often do this, several times of day. We discount information that we do not agree with.
