13. 1 defining and classifying psychological disorders: to understand psychological disorders, we can apply two complementary models, medical model: using our understanding of medical conditions to think about psychological conditions. Defining abnormal behaviour: abnormal psychology: psychological study of mental illness, e. g. someone who cuts himself and someone who gets a medical degree before being 20 are both abnormal. Downs syndrome involves unusual genetic condition; you either have the extra 21st chromosome or you do not no such thing as partial form of the disorder. Study by rosenhan; had a group of graduates go to a mental institution claiming that they were hearing voices; of the 15 students, 14 were admitted as having a mental disorder, 11 diagnosed as schizophrenic. It took weeks to figure out they didn"t have schizophrenia: therapies/treatments may not always benefit you, even the best intentions can lead to difficulties, people do not experience an increase in negative emotions upon learning their diagnosis.
