Wilderness can be defined as a pure, untouched landscape. In the 18th century, to be in a wilderness was to be deserted, savage, desolate and barren. In the 19th century, the project of american western expansion was often viewed as bringing civilization to wilderness. 20th century, wilderness had become scarce and with expansion, the vast untrammeled and supposedly undeveloped landscapes were gone. In this way, wilderness is troubling because it disguises human priorities and values as natural conditions. Today, wilderness is prized as the natures most deserving preservation that must be pristine, remote from humanity and untouched by our common past.
