Document Summary
We have now seen how the life forms that exist on earth today are evolutionarily related. In the next few lectures, we will look at several examples of the substantial diversity of bacterial life. We will see where these organisms live, and how they make their living. We will discuss key bacteria that you will encounter in the environment, your bodies, or in a variety of biotechnological settings. We will start with the proteobacteria, which are metabolically and morphologically diverse gram- negative organisms. In class, we will look at how a winogradsky column can be used to grow purple bacteria. These enzymes are housed in extensive intracytoplasmic membranes (membranes inside the cell): obligate aerobes. Pseudomonads: very heterogeneous group, taxonomy has been revised recently, aerobic chemoorganotrophs, nutritionally versatile, polar flagella. Inhabit many different environments (e. g. soil, water, animal pathogens, plant pathogens)
