Functionalism- created by emile durkheim, society is interconnected and works together to maintain balance and a social equilibrium. Conflict theory- unequal distribution of scarce resources and power. Symbolic interactionism- how individuals act consciously rather than simply to social stimulation. Culture- a collection of values, beliefs, behaviors and material objects passed on from groups from one generation to the next. Material and non material culture (folkways, mores, laws) Mores- required ways of behavior. (not smoking while pregnant) Laws- norms that are formally defined and enacted by law. Shared- it is a shared sense about what is normal behavior. Transmitted- passed through generations, not making up new cultures. Development of self (looking glass self) (i and me) Agents of socialization (families, peers, education, mass media) Total institutions (socialization, mortification of self) example of the fake prison. A type of social control that is coded by law. Informal punishment- raising your eyebrow at someone or gossiping.
