Document Summary

Negative stereotypes compromising 3 dimensions: unintelligibility, incompetence and lack of credibility, violence, thinking they are a threat to security. Any speech and human action is supposed to be intelligible otherwise it is deviant. Example: elyn saying she is being chased with a dagger: logical and sensible given social context. When you act in ways or mutter things then it is not intelligible: if not, a logical explanation is expected. If it happens then people expect the person to say something that will make sense or explain the situation that they have just witnessed. Stereotype: mental illness prone to unintelligible speech and action. Schizophrenia, serious anxiety disorders, severe depression, dementia etc: fear, anxiety & unpredictability. Most mental illnesses are perfectly sensible and entirely predictable. We assume mi are incompetent at home, work etc: assumed incompetence = lack of credibility. Some severe disorders = incompetence: schizophrenia & major depression: very capable of not performing as well.
