Greek and roman temples are not meant to house worship, they are designed for people to worship from the outside -> for dieties. Every temple is a rectangular box more columns is more complex. Credited for the arch, vault and the dome. Roman temples are roughly double the size of greek ones. Pantheon is a temple for all the gods. It"s the largest non-supported concrete dome in the world today. Oculus: means the eye, it is a hole in the dome where the priest can look up at the heavens and it also lessens the weight of the dome. Circle means eternity, square means creation sacred shapes. Coffers: squares inside the dome that reduce the weight and make the structure look larger than it is. Rain can fall through the oculus so the floor is sloped. 313 ad the edict of milan is when christians can now worship openly, this means churches are being constructed.
