Week 1 reading: stereotype, prejudice, discrimination: stereotype: beliefs/ shared characteristics shared by members of one group. Not always negative: prejudice: evaluation of group + feelings associated with that judgement, depersonalized view of others = see as a category. Socially shared representation of groups, affected by intergroup relationship and how that affect structuring relationship. Degree of agreeableness conflicts, even agree, need to be more positive: the self-fulfilling prophecy, stereotype threat: scared to be treated that way/ confirm perform poorly. Only on relevant things not all the time. Institutional discrimination: society: complexity: symbolic & modern, ambivalent, subtle. Subtle, conflicting: aversive racism: hate prejudice, racism but have negative attitudes to black americans, display discrimination actions given chances, ambivalent sexism, mindful disadvantaged minorities vs mindless advantaged majority. Advantaged group less likely to be aware of intergroup relationship. The study of how our behavior, thoughts and feelings are influenced by the groups we belong to and how people from different groups relate to one another.
