The influence of darwin: the notion that species evolved was not new. In addition, darwin"s work was also influenced by alfred russell wallace (1823-1913) He observed that all living things reproduce great numbers of themselves. If all the seeds produced by plants and all the eggs produced by various types of animals were to survive, the planet would quickly be overrun with life. So, what keeps the populations by various species in check? (b) darwin"s answer (and second point) is called struggle for existence. The resources required for existence (food, water, space, and so on) are limited. They can only support a limited number of offspring. All those reproduced must struggle for these limited resources, they must compete with members of their own species, and only some will survive. What determines which ones will survive? (c) to answer this question first requires an understanding of darwin"s third point, variation. Within each species there are slight variations.
