Bordered in back by the vertebral column and paravertebral muscles and at the sides and front by the lower rib cage and abdominal muscles. 4 layers of large, flat muscles form the ventral abdominal wall joined by the linea alba. The liver fills up most of the right upper quadrant (ruq) and extends over to the left midclavicular line. The lower edge of the liver and the right kidney normally palpable. Ovaries normally are palpable only on bimanual assessment during the pelvic examination. The abdomen is a large oval cavity extending from the diaphragm to the top of the pelvis. The abdominal muscles are located along the sides and the front by the lower rib cage.
