Nurses use communication to communicate with other members of a team, to communicate own needs to avoid burnout, to function as patient advocates and to provide quality care for clients. Effective communication promotes collaboration, helps ensure ethical and legal responsibilities and professional practice standards are met and contributes to positive patient outcomes. Therapeutic communication: dynamic interactive process consisting of words and actions, and entered into by a clinician and client for the purpose of achieving identified health-related goals. Used by health care team, clients, and families to consider care options, plan treatment approaches, reach consensus about treatment options etc. A nurse"s words, attitudes, emotions, posture, expressions and gestures have the potential to hurt or heal the patient. Therapeutic listening is not just listening to words but also body language, facial expressions, tone of voice etc. Intrapersonal communication (self talk/inner thought): form of communication that occurs within an individual.
