Ethics - critical, structured examination of how individuals and institutions should behave when their actions affect others. Value - something good that we ought to promote like bravery, integrity. Principle - a rule, usually grounded in a value, that tells you what you should do, fight for injustice, stand up for what you believe in. Consequences - promote good consequences and outcomes, and avoid bad ones. Fairness/justice - make sure that good and bad consequences are distributed fairly, treat like cases alike. Rights and duties - protect our rights and do our duties, keep our promises. All legislation should be aimed at promoting ethical values and principles. Legal reasoning requires interpretation of laws and constitution, in light of fundamental values and principles, what is fair, reasonable, and just. Unethical and illegal - sexual assault, murder, theft, perjury, fraud. Illegal - speeding to the hospital, possession of drugs, selling your kidney.
