Social influence- the ways people exert influence on the behaviours, beliefs, feelings, and attitudes of others. Types of social influence: conformity, compliance, obedience, persuasion. Compliance- changes in behaviour that are elicited by direct requests (active & external: external in the sense that compliance is always trying to get a direct action, salespeople showing up at door, panhandlers. Obedience- changes in behaviour that are produced by the commands of an authority figure (active & external: similar to compliance- in compliance it is a request, in obedience it is a command. Persuasion- an active attempt by a person, usually through some form of communication, to change another person"s attitude (active & internal: although goal is to change behaviour, you want to change the attitude behind the behaviour. It is the most persistent form of social influence. Obedience- person must be there to direct you. Internal/ external = describes the person being influenced.
