Labour studies- an introduction to work & labour. Focus on issues of work, experience of work, labour market, etc. First 5 units are focused on the historical aspects of labour. Canada in context: canada lags in economic activity. Staple: business of extracting or acquiring resource commodities in order to sell them an external market. (harold innis) Early on, there were 3 big staples in canada. Fishery: grand banks, first explorers notice this from very early points (1500"s), and noticed there were plenty of. Sh: fishing was done on lines, very rough industry, due to the weather, small boats, end of october, gets to cold to sh. Many sh have been shed out by the 1990"s. Timber industry: started around 1700"s, number one staple in 19th century, very huge demand for the big canadian logs, old growth trees (biggest demand) have a very small percentage left. Mostly found in bc: very tough guy type of industry.
