Document Summary
Archaeology = scientific study of material culture, or objects created and/or used by a specific cultural group. Typology created to provide a data (relative or absolute) outside specific excavation context; classifying objects into groups that are tailored to objects of similar function; differences within may be based on development (chronological), style (geographical), or value/status (economic). Development changes to an object over time. Artifact element of material culture in the context of study; remains of a culture; mostly discovered by excavation. Excavation from depositions in stratigraphic sequences allows us to discern chronological relationships between artifacts. Principle of stratigraphy lower strata are more ancient than upper strata. Relative dating uses other artifacts or events as points of reference. Greek epic follows tradition of oral poetry; folklore that greeks did not differentiate form factual history: Iliad (homer) recounts events during the trojan war: battle of greeks vs. trojans (troy in asia minor), anger of achilles (greek hero)
