Funk: a genre of popular music developed in the mid-late 1960s with an explicitly political component, linked to black nationalism and black power movement. Term used in black communities in new orleans as early as 1910 for more rhythmic, Early proto-jazz was played at the funkey butt hall. Emerges from southern soul (james brown) in the mid 1960s, although not necessarily separate from soul in 1960s, more of a different approach to rhythm/composition. Most directly emerges from james brown"s band. James brown papa"s got a brand new bag (1965) Scratch guitar emphasizes backbeat (2 and 4) Horns, bass, drums all have distinct repeating patterns that form an interlocking groove. All instruments are percussive: staccato - choked, repeated vocal shouts. Vocals gradually become background and rhythm is foregrounded.
