Northwest ordinance: law laying out how territories could be brought into the union. Slavery could not exist, led to the creation of the mason dixon line. Free soil: opposes the extension of slavery in the us territory + admission of slave states into the union. The free soil party is formed in 1848 and is a sign that the political system is cracking under the anti-slavery sentiment in the north. David wilmot: played a role in bringing about the civil war. He tried to attach an amendment to a war appropriations bill (didn"t want to pay for the war between texas and mexico) Slavery was allowed in texas while they were trying to claim territory in the west. Compromise of 1850: with the california gold rush, the state wanted to join the union as a free state. Kansas-nebraska act of 1854: conflict between slave owners and non-slave owners who wanted to conquer the territory.
