What is Sociology
1. Culture: Big link between culture and sports
1. The ways of life people create as they
participate in a group or society
2. It consists of all the socially invented ways

meet their needs, and achieve a sense of
significance with the process.
3. Cultural sports practices change over time,
and have different forms and meaning from

Physical Activity:
1. Ex: Chess vs. Tennis Tennis is considered PA since we require greater physical exertion than our

1. Need to separate cooperative and individualistic activities from competitive sports activities
An Institutionalized Activity (organized)
1. Need formal rules and organizational structure:
1. Standardization rules
2. Official regulatory agencies (governing bodies)
3. Rules are enforced, training schedules followed,
equipment and technology developed
4. Learning of game skills becomes formalized.

1. Privileges people with the resources to organize
competitive games and the interest in doing so.
*Privilege people who have resources, positions
with power, and so on they use their resources
for their own goods and welfare.
2. Overlooks those without resources or inclinations

1. What are the meaning, purpose, and organization
of sports?
*What activities will be defined as “official sports”?
*What will be the relative importance of different
types of physical skills in those activities.
