Technology does not exist in isolation from society. 3 elements of technology: pieces of apparatus, techniques of operation, the social institutions in which technical activities take place. Instrumentalism: technology is a value-neutral tool that helps us achieve our goals more efficiently: cupping water in our hands vs. having water in a glass. Determinism: technology operates according to an inherent, internal logic; the effects of technology are imposed by the technology itself to create a better world". Determinists understand technology as having a life of its own (p. 157)
