Concept of ir: ir; study of how states interact with one another. The only institution that has any authority to raise war, have an army. Def: a state is a legal and political concept that links population, territory and sovereignty or self- determination. This is distinct from nation, which is a cultural and or ethnic concept defining a group of people that has a shared heritage. The concept of a state is a social entity. When the people don"t acknowledge the govt it causes a revolution. Therefore, population, territory and sovereignty make a state legitimate. State is not an emotional identity, it is a legal and political identity. Ex: canada is a state, first nations and quebecois are nations. Example of a nation, kurdistan (have territory, pop, but no sovereignty), kashmir and czechnia (both claiming territory in already existing states) A state can exist with many nations, just as a nation can exist in multiple states.
