Artemia: artemia franciscana are brine shrimp, and are the most resistant animals on earth. Cysts are dormant in harsh environments, then nauplii hatch, then grow into adults. Heat shock proteins: hsp(cid:859)s are responsible for cyst survival, prevent denaturing in harsh environments, some are present only in cyst, not adult, some remain present all the time. Diapause: diapause is the condition that cysts are in when they are dormant; includes low metabolic rate, and survival for ~15 years in harsh environments. Bradford reagent: used in the concentration assay; dye in reagent binds to proteins causing colour change from brown to blue (can measure absorbance to make standard curve). Bsa: bovine serum albumin, protein used as standard for dilution series. Buffer: used to dilute stock solution of bsa to make series of standards (different concentrations) for standard curve. Blank: blank is a cuvette of buffer used to account for the spectrophotometer background and adjust the machine to zero.
