Document Summary

Provide a definition and two examples for each category of motives. The four primary sources of motivated behavior are needs, cognitions, emotions and external events. We are highly motivated to satisfy our needs because they are fundamental to our survival. There are two types of needs: physiological and socio-psychological. Physiological needs include needs relating to the body that are essential, such as eating, drinking, and sleeping. Socio-psychological needs are needs that satisfy our mental desires, such as the need for affiliation, the need for success and for happiness. Our needs motivate us to continually seek out things that are beneficial to us. A second source of motivated behavior lies in our cognitions which are our ways of thinking, believing, perceiving and understanding. Our cognitions motivate us in three different ways. The first is in our beliefs, which are our morals: we are guided by our beliefs in what is right and wrong.
