When we look up at the sky our eyes becomes scientific instruments and ours eyes become interpreters. What we know about the size and structure of the universe is deducted from observation (mainly light) and our theories physics. Our views of the universe depend on the theories of the law of nature. What we see is instantaneous in time, hence when we see a star we could see it as it was this instant. Earths role: the earth does not hold any privileged role in the universe. We see stars as they were in the past.
