Statistics is the study of how to collect, summarize and interpret data. Data numerical facts and figures from which you can draw conclusions. A population is a set of units (usually people, objects or events). The characteristics of a population unit is a variable. Examples: (1) studying the starting salaries for 2011 mba graduates. Variable = starting salaries (2) studying the fuel efficiency of hondas. A measurement assigns a value of a variable to each population unit. Mba starting salary measured to the nearest dollar. Fuel efficiency measured to the nearest liter per 100km. Usually focuses on studying one or more characteristic of populations units: measurement - it"s the process of measuring to find out the extent, quantity, amount (cid:4666)etc. (cid:4667, value the result of the measurement. It"s the specific measurement for a particular unit in of the variable of interest for some item from the population (it produces data for analysis) Collecting starting salaries of last year"s mba graduates.
