Law enforcement: maintaining public order, emergency response, assistance to vicims of crime. Two types of cynicism: directed at the police force, directed at the general public. Elements of cynicism: commitment is greatest in the beginning, distrust against the world, cynicism against the agency, alienaion, anomie. Special invesigaion unit (sui: militarisic, war stories, contempt of cop syndrome, code of silence, toughness, courage, and respect. Judge the seriousness of the situaion less by what the law says and more by what the reacion of others. Pro law enforcement over order maintenance: service style. Take all the request for law enforcement and order maintenance seriously by they are less likely to make an arrest or lay charges. Discreion is not let to the oicer. Insituion of privacy: police are prohibited from certain methods of obtaining evidence. 2: police are embedded in other organizaional networks, constrained by interpersonal issues, constrained in their work by ideological and personal discreion, occupaional worries.
