Document Summary

Pet scans and mri scans are used to get images of the brain in neurologically normal individuals. These tests are important because they have high spatial resolution and allow the imaging of subcortical brain structures. Because they are neurologically normal one can assume that any asymmetries between the two brains are also normal and do not negatively affect the functioning of the brain. In additional language areas the majority of right handed people had dominance in the left hemisphere but the same is not true for left handed individuals, nor can we say the opposite is true. Using a sodium amobarbital test, 70% of left handers have language localized in the left hemisphere, 15% have language located in the right hemisphere, and 15% do not have it specifically lateralized in either.
