The psychology of police investigations/police interrogations and detecting deception. Purpose of an interrogation: obtain a confession, obtain information about the crime. An interrogation in north america is to get a confession from the suspect. In england or whales the goal is simply to get information about the crime. The increasing problem with this is that if your goal is to get a confession, it immediately becomes a coercive environment where certain problems will be more likely. Stunguns and the nyc police, stunguns used to get information (1980"s: brown v. mississippi (1936, r. v. hoilett (1999, being stripped of their clothing and leaving them naked, interviewing sleep deprived individuals or people who are intoxicated. If you look at interrogations now, you don"t see a lot of this. Lying, exaggerating, implicit psychological threats, implying leniency, moral justifications (police officers morally justifies rape), promises of assistance. This is supported in north america and skilled people do this very well.
