Skilled trades; 90% of nation"s manufacturing; family farming in rural areas. 4 million slaves (includes border states that didn"t secede) Population 1869: 19 million including nearly half a million free blacks. Need white people to guide them and assist them. Tried to defend slavery as an institution.
