Engl 2p82 study guide: unruly women were publically humiliated in english culture, woman being thrown into a body of water, designed to humiliate a woman who had been deemed by a community as unruly or transgressive. If a woman was suspected of being a prostitute, she would be stripped whipped and carted around the street and she would have to stand in the city square holding a candle making repentance. Bridling: bridles were made to put over a woman"s face made of iron, with a leash. Woman who stepped out of their proper place would be disciplined like this. Used as late as the mid 18the century: woman and culture intro in the anthology. King james the first of england and 6th of scotland 1603-1625. Genres are not static, they change over time. What comedy is, changes even during the short period of time that shakespeare was writing comedies. This course is organized generically, comedies then tragedies next semester.
