Document Summary

The first stage, forming, is characterized by a great deal of uncertainty about the group"s purpose, structure, and leadership. Members test the waters to determine what types of behaviors are acceptable. This stage is completed when members have begun to think of themselves as part of a group. The storming stage is one of intragroup conflict. Members accept the existence of group, but there is resistance to the constraints that the group imposes on individuality. Furthermore, there is conflict over who will control group. When this stage is complete, there will be relatively clear hierarchy of leadership within the group. In the norming stage, members have developed close relationships and cohesiveness. In other words, there is a strong sense of group identity and camaraderie. This stage is complete when the group structure solidifies and the group has a common set of expectations of what defines correct member behavior. In the performing stage, the structure is finally fully functional and accepted.
