PSY2071 Final: Week 6 lecture
Document Summary
Arise from abnormalities in growth and development of the brain or central nervous system. This gives rise to disordered cognitive functions (emotion regulation, learning ability etc. ) that unfolds as an individual develops and grows. Can happen at any stage (from birth to childhood and beyond) Genes are important (generate new brain cells, migration, forming connections, producing proteins) See gp for assessment and referral to pediatrician, psychologist. Diagnosis made by specialist pediatrician or child psychiatrist. Assisting people with neurodevelopment disorders requires understanding of the whole system: Eg a behavior can be similar for multiple clients but arise from different causes. By studying gene-behavior relationships in neurodevelopmental disorders that have a strong genetic origin we can: A distinct sequence of dna forming part of a chromosome (blueprint for a protein) A variation in a single nucleotide that occurs at a specific point in the genome. Diseases whose genetic contribution is believed to come from multiple genes simultaneously.
