Choline esters are chemically similar to ach. Cholinomimetic alkaloids & synthetic analogues includes muscarin, bethanechol, pilocarpine & oxotremorine. Competitively block the action of ach at muscarinic receptors. Block the effects of stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Has a greater permeation of the blood-brain barrier than atropine, so has marked effects on the cns. Very little effect on the actions of ach at nicotinic receptors. Relaxes smooth muscle of the bronchial tract (less effective than adrenaline) Effects the cns; causes excitement, agitation, irritability, hallucinations. Used for urinary dysfunction (contracts smooth muscle of the bladder)
