STRATEGIC CHINA NOTES WEEK 1-12
HISTORY
The opium wars were two 19th century wars that involved Britain and China. It Disabled the
working population and weakened the Qing Dynasty which lead to china being forced to
trade with the rest of the world.
The century of humiliation refers to a period in which china was defeated in many wars,
including the opium wars, another japan war and the British invasion of Tibet. The CPC
believed that in order to end this humiliation period, China must unify with Taiwan and
create the oe hia piiple.
POLICY
The one china principle insists that Taiwan and mainland china are inseparable and are
inevitably a part of a single china.
The one china policy acknowledges that there is only one Chinese government and under
the policy, the US recognises China over Taiwan. This policy also commits to peaceful
development and making each manoeuvrer, economic, political or military wise, a win-win
for the world. Mutual respect and no confrontation is what they are basing their policies off
and this is Confucianism in nature as it creates social harmony and contributes to all those
politically involved with China.
GOVERNING BODIES
CPC
China is controlled by the Communist party of china. This party focuses on maintaining a
legacy in the areas of education, economics, trade and security regimes. Its overall slogan is
a community for common destiny, meaning that china is acting as a balancing power and
wants countries to rise with it through foreign diplomacy and policy. It endorses Marxist
atheism which states that economics drives societies rise and the current leader Xi, believes
that a Marxists like economic policy is needed in order to rejuvenate china.

SLOGANS (GOALS)
The Chinese dream is about creating a common destiny for all, a world that is harmonious

IDENTITY
Do’t hae to e Chiese to idetify ith the country. People fall into 3 categories,
mainland china; which is those who reside in the ethnic regions. The Chinese Diaspora,
those who are traditional Chinese and reside in different countries all over the world. And
the non-han and non-chinese people who can be those who are learning about the Chinese
culture and projecting in to other, and therefore educating those about China.
You could almost equate their identity to being paradoxical in nature as the mainland, being
the stog, eed the eak eing the diaspora and non-chinese/han in order to project
their culture onto the rest of the world and have more international recognition. The
Confucian values that the Chinese are currently embodying, such as a harmonious attitude
and win-win like policy piiples, is uildig up the Chiese’s positie iage
China currently has identity problem of legitimacy and the fact that they lack a democracy.
In regard to legitimacy, this is questioned through their human rights issues with Xiang jiang.
Currently, china has banned all Muslims from wearing burkas and speaking their native
tongue. Furthermore, in Tibet China has banned any speak of ganji, which is a symbolic
buddist leader. With democracy, china believes that being a democratic leader does not
sufficiently reflect their traditional culture. Particularly because of the huge gap between
the rich and the poor, and the ability of these two hierarchies improperly gain control,
which would not be in the best interests of the state. The west does not approve of this as
China is different, and this is perceived as a threat. Despite their discouragement towards
becoming a democratic society, china has given voting freedoms to the smaller provinces
and villages. This means that citizens can vote for a chief, which controls the regions money
and business ventures and investment opportunities. This has become problematic as those
who are going for chief position in areas with high resources and lots of wealth as they are
often known to threaten and bribe citizens while also assassinating other candidates. The
CPC would like to avoid this at a higher level of government, despite the pressure from the
west.
Nationalism is a widely shared value that is used to strengthen foreign relations and prevent
any democratic regimes. China is currently using nationalism in order to promote and
eetually uify Chia ad Taia, to eate a oe hia ad gai oe tatio ithi
the international sphere. China also uses this strategy through the ROC and the PRC and also
through Xing jiang and Tibet in order to increase its landmass and therefore it projection of
power.
