President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave this speech on January 6, 1941. At the time, World War II raged in Europe, but the United States wasn't involved. Many Americans didn't want to get involved. Other Americans felt that Hitler must be stopped because he represented a threat to democracy throughout the world.
 
President Roosevelt begins the speech by saying that the United States finds itself at a moment that is "unprecedented, " or never known in its history.
